Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle

For dates please contact Phil North OT at the Centre
Current fee is: £100

At specific times of the year we are able to offer driving assessments in a wheelchair accessible Chrysler Grand Voyager, fitted with an automatic side access ramp and the following hand controls:

  • Electronic radial accelerator;
  • Electronic central ring accelerator;
  • Mechanical push brake;
  • Infr-red switching unit;
  • Secondary control bleep system;
  • Electronic linear slide accelerator and brake.

The power assistance on the steering has been lightened to 10 lbs.
The driver's seat is electronically adjustable for transfers.
Alternatively, a successfully crash tested wheelchair is available if your own is not suitable to use for driving.

 You will be seen by a qualified Occupational Therapist and an experienced Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor.

This comprehensive service includes:

An introductory interview, including an assessment of your physical
abilities to enable us to identify the adaptations that best suit your needs

 An assessment of wheelchair access and seating needs.

 A practical test drive; this includes a familiarisation drive on quiet public roads, to get used to the vehicle, and an optional period involving a variety of traffic solutions as agreed by you.

The session concludes with a post-drive discussion to summarise the possible options or issues for you to consider.

A full report will be posted to you within 2 weeks of your appointment.
